I’m having a Andy Rubin moment!

After reading Andy Rubins recent blog post regarding the misinformation in the press about Android and Google’s role in supporting the Android ecosystem, I’m more confused than ever.

The stated goal of Google and the Open Handset Alliance is not to fragment Android. Almost in the same breath Rubin goes on to say “ there are no lock-downs or restrictions against customizing UIs.

As always, device makers are free to modify Android to customize any range of features for Android devices.”

In my mind these statements are not harmonious as the result of one statement is in direct contradiction to the stated purpose of the other statements goal.

I’ve been a proponent for some time now of Google wrestling back control of system updates from carriers and handset manufacturers. As part of that process Google  would require manufacturers to separate their custom Uis from the operating system making them both optional and user un-installable.

I’ve urged action on this issue in the past and although handset partners maybe unhappy about the prospect of having to separate their custom interfaces from the OS, it’s good for users. It means less Android fragmentation, users will receive software updates faster and many handsets will be supported longer.

C’mon Andy kill the FUD and do the right thing!
